If you have got Java installed as a plugin in your browser and you are using a Mac or a PC Screenr might be an alternative for you.

It did not work for me on Linux tough.

What about...
Xvidcap (or recordmydesktop) + KdenLive (the best video editor I've ever used in my life) + CompizFusion (zooming effects + pointing and drawing tools).

Xvidcap lets you capture your screen
Kdenlive. Lets you capture your screen and edit the video in wider formats than Camtasia. but I'd not recommend it for screen capturing. Probabilly I'm wrong but I had a bad exerience . However, It's the easiest video editor I've used in my life and very owerfull.

With CompizFusion you have a lot of zooming, pointing and screen drawing resorces.

And all of them are just free... D)

Cheers
